Tips To Tackle Fall Allergies

Tips To Tackle Fall Allergies

Have you ever felt the discomfort brought by allergies just when the beautiful season of fall sets in? It’s such a disappointment to miss the fun of outdoor activities. It’s more stressful to think that you have to wait for another year for another opportunity of fall undertakings. Thankfully, here are some tips to help you battle fall allergies:

Reduce exposure to allergy-causing particles.

Of course, the best way to prevent allergies is to avoid contact with allergens. However, this is not an easy thing to do since the fun of the season is outside the four corners of the house. To avoid collecting pollens and dust, close your windows and turn on your air conditioner. Make sure to have a regular filter change to ensure clean indoor air.

Keep an eye on allergen counts.

It is important to monitor allergen counts to know whether or not it’s safe to go outside. Pollens are on their peak on dry, windy days. Refrain from going out on this weather or else you’ll get caught by allergy-causing particles. The National Allergy Bureau provides daily report on pollen and mold counts.

Wash up after a long outdoor exposure.

If you had a long day outside, make sure to take a shower before you move to the different corners of your house. It is likely that you’ve collected a large number of pollen and dust and it might be circulated in your indoor air. Do not set in bed without taking a shower or you might find yourself sleeping in a pollen pillow.

Do not hang clothes and bed sheets outside.

Although hanging clothes and bed sheets outside is a good practice, it’s not the right thing to do during this season. Pollens are easily dispersed by wind and it might get piled in your fabrics. The last thing you want to experience is wearing clothes coated with dust or sleeping in pollen bed sheets.

Change your activity time.

It’s better to have outdoor family activities on the later part of the day.  Ragweed pollens are widespread in the morning to midday. If you want to have a workout, do it on the late afternoon or evening, if possible.

Practice a consistent medication.

Antihistamines and decongestants are commonly used to get rid of allergy. There are also over the counter drugs but some have negative effects so be extra careful. You can also opt for allergy shot which is the modern approach and has long term effect to relieve allergy.

We cannot prevent allergy exposures, but there are lots of ways to deal with them. Don’t let allergies spoil the season’s fun.
